Rooted and Rising: Stories of Strength, Faith, and Community

We had the incredible opportunity to send supplies to West Virginia as they respond to devastating flooding in their communities and surrounding states. These churches sent us supplies in our time of need and we are now able to respond in kind.

large-IMG_0919 — We gathered for training and conversations on how to best walk neighbors through the loss, grief, members of the team gathered for training and conversations on how to best walk neighbors through the loss, grief, and process of recovery on the other side of the hurricane. This training was provided through UMCOR and partnership with the UMC disaster ministries.

We got a call about an elderly woman who had a questionable tree in her backyard. She was concerned about the tree falling on her house. One of our network coordinators was able to do a site visit and ABCCM was able to help cover the cost of the tree removal.

During and after the hurricane, our church was able to establish relationships with several non-profits that helped us resource the community our church works in. We are a church that is directly connected to two Asheville Housing Authority apartment complexes. Through our partnerships we've been able to provide people with food, water, cleaning supplies, baby supplies, personal hygiene products, and all kinds of other blessings. One of those blessings included new shoes. Because of how quickly the shoes were donated to us, we weren't really able to get the word out, but the neighborhood helped with that! The next thing we knew, lines were out the door. Hundred's of brand new pairs of shoes went to many who work, live, and play in our community. The day of the event, after we had run out of shoes, a woman who teaches at a local charter school pulled me aside to tell me a story. She said, "when I heard you were giving away shoes, I got here as fast as I could to get a few pairs for some students I work with. I think God really wanted to help teach one of my students an important lesson through these shoes. When I got back to my school, I had to sit down with one of my students, who had just been caught stealing from another student. I asked him, 'why did you steal that money?' His response was, 'I'm trying to get money so I can get a new pair of shoes.'" The woman started smiling. She pulled out a pair of the shoes that she got at our event, handed them to the boy and said, 'This is how God works. We work with our community to have our needs taken care of. When you have a need, you can talk to people in your community and see your needs met. You don't have to steal to get what you want.'" This teacher saw God at work in providing shoes to be handed out to the community, through the church being responsible to make sure those who were in need were cared for, and through her role as a teacher ALL WORKING TOGETHER TO HELP THIS ONE STUDENT. God is good.
