WHAT: On Wednesday, July 13th from 8 a.m. until 11:30 a.m., The Home Depot Foundation will team up with Asheville Buncombe Community Christian Ministries to revamp Transformation Village, a transitional living facility for women and children experiencing homelessness.
Nearly 300 volunteers led by Team Depot, The Home Depot’s associate volunteer force, will revamp the outdoor area to give the women and children who live there a comfortable and enjoyable space to spend time. They will build three new playgrounds for the children, install sod for a new ball field, build raised garden beds and create seating and shade structures for the 24-acre property. They will also work with Paws4People, a local service dog organization, to build dozens of dog beds for children with disabilities and veterans battling PTSD.
Since it opened in 2021, Transformation Village has served more than 250 women and children, including 25 female veterans experiencing homelessness. Residents live on site for anywhere from several months to two years and are offered training and education opportunities from AB Tech Community College, which is co-located on the campus.
Giving back to veterans is personal to The Home Depot as more than 35,000 of the company’s associates are veterans or military spouses. Since 2011, The Home Depot Foundation has invested $400 million in veteran causes. Over the past 10 years, The Home Depot Foundation has helped renovate and enhance more than 50,000 veteran homes and facilities, ensuring more of our nation’s heroes have a safe, comfortable place to call home that fits their individual needs. ABCCM provides 100 beds of transitional housing and 6 beds for emergency shelter. Transforming lives is through four developmental phases called Steps to Success. These include stabilization with all the basic necessities provided; life skills training with 24 volunteer courses per month to choose from including Bible studies; education and professional training certifications that lead to living wage jobs; and reintegration that leads to permanent housing. We are honored to report that 8 out of 10 leave us with a living wage job and permanent housing.
